As you know, time is an important part of our daily life. But have you ever thought about how it came to be?

In the past, time could be thought: the past, the present and the future.

The past is about what happened or passed, the present is about what is happening, and of course the future is about what is going to happen.

1. Parts of the time

Look at the picture

there are five parts of a clock

• hour hand: kim giờ

• minute hand: kim phút

• second hand: kim giây

• minute lines: đường chỉ phút

• hour numbers: số giờ

2. How to watch the time

• The first step: you have to know the numbers (from 1 to 60)

(Bước đầu tiên: Các bạn phải nắm được số từ 1 đến 60)

• The second step: you have to identify the hour hand, the minute hand (the longer hands show minute, the shorter hand shows hour)

Bước 2: bạn phải phân biệt được kim giờ, kim phút (kim ngắn chỉ giờ, kim dài chỉ phút)

• The third step: you have to know how to read a clock

Bước 3: bạn phải biết xem đồng hồ

• There are 12 numbers on the clock. (from 1 to 1212). These numbers divide the clock face into twelve equal parts. Between any two numbers are five small divisions. Each small division represents one minute. Therefore, there are sixty divisions on the dial face. The minute hand completes a round of the dial in 60 seconds.

Có 12 con số trên mặt đồng hồ (từ 1 đến 12). Những con số này chia mặt đồng hồ ra làm 12 phần bằng nhau. Giữa bất kì 2 con số là 5 phần nhỏ. Mỗi phần nhỏ là 1 phút. Vì vậy, có 60 phần trên mặt đồng hồ. Kim phút sẽ chạy 1 vòng tròn theo kim đồng hồ trong vòng 60 giây tương đương với 1 phút

• Look at the given clock here, the minute hand points to 1 division after number 5. It shows that the minute hand has moved 5 × 5 + 1 or 26 minutes. So, the time shown in the given clock is 26 minutes past or 3:26.

  
  
  

Bạn hãy nhìn ví dụ dưới đây, nhìn vào đồng hồ nhé.

Kim phút chỉ quá 1 phút tính từ số 5. Nó chỉ rằng kim phút đã di chuyển đến 5 x 5 + 1 tức là 26 phút hay nói cách khác là 3h 26 phút

• For Example:

Write the time shown on the given clock.

The hour hand is between 5 and 6

Kim giờ chỉ khoảng giữa số 5 và 6

The minute hand is on the second small division after 8.

Kim phút nằm ở ô thứ 2 sau số 8

So, the minute hand has moved 5 × 8 + 2 = 42 minutes.

Vì vậy kim phút có thể được tính như sau: 5 x 8 + 2 = 42 phút

The time is 42 minutes past 5.

It is written as 5:42

Vậy giờ được tính là 5h 42 phút

3. How to say the time

1. using o’clock when: (Giờ đúng)

For example:

⌛1:00: It’s one o’clock

⌛4:00: it’s four o’clock.

2. using “past”: (Giờ hơn)

It’s + hour + mịnute

or

It’s + minute + past + hour

Ex: 3:20

⌛It’s three twenty

or It’s twenty past three.

3. using “to”: (Giờ kém)

It’s + minute (60 - minute) + to + hour (hour + 1)

Cách này các bạn lưu ý: Phút sẽ được tính bằng cách lấy 60 trừ đi phút đề bài cho, còn giờ sẽ lấy giờ của đề bài + 11

Ex: 5:50

⌛It’s ten to six.

Note: 

quarter/ a quarter = 15 minutes

half = 30 minutes

Look at these examples

Ex 1: 9:15

⌛It’s nine fifteen.

⌛It’s fifteen past nine.

⌛or It’s quarter past ninenine

Ex 2: 7:30

⌛It’s seven thirty.

⌛or It’s half past seven.

Time is valuable and when it passes you will never get it back. Therefore, you have to plan what you do and save as much time as possible.
